Biography
Educational Philosophy: I believe in student learning through action. As a teacher I provide students with experiences that allow them to develop coherent models to explain the world around them. This is referred to as the "Modeling" approach to instruction in chemistry. I view myself as a "Guide by the Side" in your education, rather than the "Sage on the Stage."
Educational Biography: I am a proud alumnus of Arizona State University and still a proud Sun Devil! I earned a B.A.E. degree in Chemistry in 2003 and earned a Master of Natural Science (MNS) degree in Physics in 2010. I have experience teaching both Physics and Chemistry so feel free to discuss anything science/math with me or come in for any science help!
Courses I teach:
CHM130AA: Fundamental Chemistry with Lab
- "The Story of Particles": We explore the fundamental nature of the "stuff" or matter around us. This is essentially a survey course exploring the fundamentals of general chemistry. The emphasis is on essential concepts and problem solving techniques, exploring the basic principles of measurement, chemical bonding, structure and reactions, nomenclature, and the chemistry of acids and bases. The course prepares students taking more advanced courses in chemistry, such as General Chemistry (see below :-).
- This is an introductory chemistry course, with NO chemistry prerequisite for the course.
CHM151AA: General Chemistry 1 with Lab
- "The Story of Charge": We dive deeper into the fundamental nature of charge in matter and particles, how particles interact through charge, and how and why charges lead interacting particles to physically change or chemically react. This is a more detailed study of principles of chemistry for science majors and students in pre-professional curricula.
- This is a first semester General Chemistry college course, and requires a prerequisite of Fundamental Chemistry or High School Chemistry.
CHM152AA: General Chemistry 2 with Lab
- "The Story of Change": We dive even deeper into particles, exploring models of how and why particles change physically and chemically. This involves a more detailed study of the chemical properties of reaction thermodynamics, electrochemistry, kinetics, equilibrium theory, acid/base chemistry and other selected topics.
- This is the second semester General Chemistry college course, requiring a prerequisite of General Chemistry 1.
