Biography
Demetria Shepherd is a dedicated advocate for increasing access to higher education for students from diverse backgrounds. As a first-generation college graduate from her Diné (Navajo) family, she has experienced firsthand the transformative power of education. Demetria began her college journey at age 15 through the Hoop of Learning Program at Phoenix College, later she earned both an Associate’s degree and a Certificate in American Indian Studies. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degrees from Northern Arizona University (NAU).
At Scottsdale Community College (SCC), Demetria serves as both staff and adjunct faculty, supporting students through programs such as Achieving a College Education (known as ACE), Hoop of Learning, and Salt River Jr. ACE. These programs promote early college opportunities, academic success, and community engagement. With a passion for building connections, Demetria fosters collaboration between SCC faculty, staff, and community partners to create engaging, innovative experiences that inspire and empower students.
Off the clock, Demetria enjoys exploring podcasts, attending live concerts, going to live basketball or baseball games, hiking, and traveling whenever she can. She loves discovering local food spots, connecting with community events, and spending time outdoors. Her passions for learning and creativity extend beyond the classroom, making her approach to education dynamic, fun, and student-centered.
