Biography
I am residential faculty and teach introductory and general chemistry. I have taught at Scottsdale Community College and Estrella Mountain Community College since 2018 and for the prior ten years at public high schools in the Phoenix area. I have a BS in Chemistry and an MS in Wood and Fiber Science from the University of Wisconsin.
I am actively involved with the American Modeling Teachers Association, which is a grassroots organization of science educators that looks to promote Modeling Instruction, a student-centered, guided-inquiry approach to teaching science. I have led professional development courses for other high school and college instructors since 2016. I live in Phoenix and in my free time enjoy spending time with my wife Tammy, our three dogs, as well as pursuing my hobbies of woodworking and baking.
I was interviewed for a podcast in 2023 where we discussed teaching pedagogy, my philosophy of learning, and how we can do a better job of teaching math in Chemistry classes. If you want to listen, here is a link: https://sciencemodelingtalks.com/episodes/episode-48-mitchell-sweet/
In 2024 I was also named one of the seven new Community College Presidents' Initiative in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (CCPI-STEM) Fellows, https://www.ccpi-stem.org
